Today we got another
dog. I did not plan on getting a second dog. Ever. But we’ve recently found out
that while Sammy will bark at one or two coyotes off in the distance, she is
terrified if there are more or if they are closer. A few nights ago, we heard a
bunch of coyotes howling very close to the house, either down in the pasture or
even up by the road, and Sammy spent the night cowering by the house behind a
bush. Didn’t make a noise. At all.
The theory we’re going with is that having a puppy
will help Sammy feel a little more brave. And since Sammy is 8, she’ll have a
little company as she gets even older and may not want to be as active.
I saw a sign at Orcheln’s for cheap puppies. So we went and picked one out. Adam chose the biggest, fluffiest one of the nine. I would have went with the one that was the most calm, but Adam’s reasoning was that since it’s practically winter, the biggest one would have the best chance of doing well when it starts getting even colder. I can see that, but still….. You can’t go wrong with calm, right?
The puppy was not named, so Emmy chose a name on
the way home. She wanted some ideas, so I gave her several dozen choices,
ranging from descriptive names (Fluffy, Harry) to real human names (Bailey,
Lenny) to names from shows she likes (Thomas, Tigger). In the end, of course,
she named the new puppy Blacky. Because he’s black. And she had me list all
those other ones because……..??? Yeah, I know.
Here’s where we’re at. We got the cats to keep
mice out of the cars. We got the dog to keep coyotes farther away from the
cats. We got the puppy to help the dog be brave. So what are we going to have
to do next? I’m feeling like we’re reliving that “House that Jack Built” sort
of scenario. Don’t be surprised if having the puppy leads to us having to get,
I don’t know, a giraffe or something. Wouldn’t that figure?
