Progress on Packing

We're slowly moving more stuff over, and the girls love playing while one of us or our parents hangs out at the new house with them. We've used the new small table, and they think it's really awesome. Because it is. Especially with the rolling chairs!

So at first, I kept track of how many boxes/bags/tubs I had moved because I thought I would feel motivated by all the progress we were making.

It didn’t take long to realize that there is no motivation in finding out that I have, for example:
  • 2 boxes of cds, which I rarely have time to listen to and some of it isn't appropriate for kids anyway (Sorry, Self Righteous Brothers. You know it's true.)
  • 9 boxes of random papers and stuff that haven’t been sorted since college, and I have no idea of where to put them or what to do with them, but I still cling to hope that I'll get to it soon
  • 6 small tubs of t-shirts, none of which fit correctly at this time since most of them came from the junior section
  • 4 medium sized tubs of casual and semi-dressy clothes that really don’t fit at all, looked fine while I was teaching, but would look terribly out of place as I’m changing a diaper in the Walmart parking lot, hair not brushed, and pants that don’t actually fit right
  • 1 box of bubble bath, bath beads, and bath salts that never get used because there isn’t time for serious “relaxing”, which my Mom has been eying and I suspect the box may disappear, and I WILL notice (ahem)
  • 12 paper bags full of kids books and novels, which I justify having because I used to teach elementary and now my girls can read them, but really I bought them because it's the kind of book I prefer to read even though I haven't been in the suggested age range for a couple decades (Don't get me started on the glaring flaws in the Baby Sitters Club books, which were otherwise great literature.)

So I stopped counting boxes pretty quickly, and instead we’re just trying to pack, unpack, and repack as quickly as possible. We’ve mostly used the same few dozen copy boxes and varying sized tubs to move. It’s not entirely practical, but without a lot of room to pile up boxes at the old house, it was the best we could do.

We’re kind of reaching a point, though, where we can’t do much more without making a huge push. We need more furniture moved so we have places to put the other stuff we haven’t moved yet; but we need to move more stuff out so there’s room to get the furniture out of here. What we really need is 48 to 72 hours with a van and a truck, the girls with my parents, maybe a couple other people, and us just moving that entire time. It's a lot to hope for, unfortunately.

I’d say we have about a fifth of our stuff moved. Maybe a sixth. It’s not very much, and I’m feeling a little discouraged, but maybe once Adam’s grad school is over, we’ll be able to get this done fast. At least, that's what I keep saying to justify how badly we're doing this. Because all those Harry Potter spells I learned? Not helping.
